5 Main Factors That Cause Stress

Stress is a condition when human feels mentally or bodily pressure. Human being deals with stress almost every day. There are many factors that can cause stress to people. 5 main factors that can cause stress are;


1. INTERNAL

Internal factor comes from individual itself such as personality traits and physical illness. Illness such as flu can make people feel uncomfortable and stress. They can’t do their work efficiently and they may have problem to sleep. Other than that, personality traits such as perfectionism also can cause stress. A perfectionist always wants the best result, but then they worry too much. Study shows perfectionism can lead to stress and burnout at workplace.

2. PHYSICAL

Standing for too long, pre-menstrual syndrome and over exercise is example of physical factor that can cause stress. For example, doctors and nurses in operating room need to stand for a long hour until the operation is done. This factor can affect stress towards doctors and nurses and as result they could risk a patient’s life. Other example of physical factors is having pre-menstrual syndrome. Women would feel uneasy, pain, headache and cause them to be in stressful condition.

3. CHANGES

Changes of situation, losing your beloved one, and health conditions are example of changes that can cause stress. Losing a family member or having a newborn can give impact to somebody’s life. It is very hard and painful to accept when somebody you love passed away, it feels empty and different. Changes of health such as leg injury can cause a person in stress because there are limitations to do things they used to do. Study reports people with leg injury can even suffer with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

2. FAMILY

Every family have their own struggles and stress. It is fortunate for people to have positive relationship with their family member. Some of stress that comes from family is financial problem, illness, death, divorce, and high expectation. A Korean drama called ‘Sky Castle’ focusses on the issue which parents put high pressure towards their children’s academic. It causes their children to live in stress, unhappy, and having miserable life. Although it is drama, but it happens in real life and it can kill children’s self-esteem.

5. EMPLOYMENT

At times, having a job can cause stress, and having no job also can cause stress. Survey by American Psychological Association (APA) reveals that about 60% people of United States feel stress at work. A stress employee has problem such as heavy workload, lack of reward and problem with colleague. It is important to manage stress because employee’s ability to manage stress can determine their performance and productivity at work. Meanwhile, unemployed people can have stress because of financial problem.
